Notetaking on Camera Techniques

INTERVIEWING:
• What seven items should you bring with you when you are shooting an interview?
(Clocks Tick Tock Making Heads Pound Loudly)
C: Camera/mini DV/VHS
T: Tripod   No Tripod = Bad Techniques
T: Tape/mini DV TAPE/Hard Drive/DVD/VHS TAPE
M: Microphone      Don't Give Interviewee Microphone/Hang loose away
H: Headphones   Make sure mic works
P: Power  AC Adapter/Battery
L: Lights Source  Camera Light/Floor Light/Natural Light

• Shooting into a light source = Always behind the camera/ Shooting into a light source causes a silhouette.

Button to adjust = Backlight Button - Brings more light to the background.


• Where do you want your light source? Behind the camera.


• On what object should you focus the camera? Nose of their face.


• No tripod= Bad Techniques


• Date and Time= Permanently recorded on your tape


• SP/EP = Standard Play/Extended Play

• Camera shoots in Standard Play

• Pre-Roll- 2-3 seconds before you start your interview


• Post-Roll- 3 seconds after


CAMERA SHOTS:

***BACKGROUND: Dynamic - Has some depth, not plain.

• 1 Shot= One Shot - Middle of the chest, room above their head.

• 1 Shot with graphic= Leave room for side graphic.

• 2 Shot= 2 people being interviewed

• CU- Close Up - Action/Detail

• MS- Medium Shot - Some Detail

• LS- Long Shot - Whole Body

• ECU- Extreme Close Up

• Rule of thirds- Draw imaginary lines


CAMERA MOVEMENTS:
• Tilt- Moving the camera up and down


• Pan- Left and right camera movement


• Zoom- Getting closer/farther away from focus point


• Dolly- Camera on wheels

LIGHTS
• Key- Brightest life from side at 45 degree angle


• Fill- Exact same 45 degree angle and fills in shadows


• Back- To separate person from background


MICROPHONES:
• Unidirectional- One microphone

• Omnidirectional- All around microphone

• Cardiod- Picks up sound from a heart shaped radius

• Lav/Lapel Microphone- Hooks onto your shirt

• Boom Microphone- To get one seperate group of people and not all around/Unidirectional Mic
